GROVEWELL recommends two days of Coaching for Global AdvantageSM, our signature service, for most global business assignees.  For full information about this innovative methodology, click here.

Two Options for Coaching Delivery

GROVEWELL's two days of expatriate coaching should be separated by several weeks.  Two options (diagrams below) enable this to occur.  Each is effective.

The point of these two diagrams is not to say that the two coaching sessions must occur at any precise time, but rather to note the importance of their being separated by several weeks.  These examples also illustrate that a coaching session should not occur only a few days before, nor only a few days after, the actual relocation of the family to the host country.

If a client firm requests only pre-departure coaching (not illustrated above), we will deliver it.  But we do not recommend it.  Post-arrival coaching is far more useful in developing global leadership skills that are quickly applicable in the host country.  Post-arrival coaching is more effective, and thus more cost-effective, for our clients.

When a client firm requests only one day of coaching, we will deliver it.

Coordination of Cross-Border Coaching

When the two coaching sessions are in different nations, our two coaches are in direct contact with each other to insure continuity and individualized responsiveness in our service delivery.  GROVEWELL partner Willa Hallowell oversees the cross-border communication and coordination process.

Our Participant Manuals

During the portion of our coaching that is focused on adaptation to host business unit and local culture, GROVEWELL uses its own participant manual.  All of our manuals emphasize value differences and how these impact interactions with colleagues in the host country.  Our manuals may be good, but our coaches are often reminded that their job is to enhance coachee performance and leadership capacity, not to simply page through the manual.

Development of Global Leadership Competencies

As the coaching focuses more and more on the development of global leadership competencies for application in the host business unit, our manual usually is set aside.  This portion of our work is classic executive coaching, guided by GROVEWELL’s Coaching for Global Advantage methodology.

Coaching for the Assignee's Spouse or Partner

The adaptation portion of our coaching is designed and intended for both the assignee and (if any) his or her spouse or domestic partner.  Both are present during most or all of the adaptation coaching.  When the attention shifts to the development of leadership competencies, only the assignee is present.

Where Coaching Takes Place

The adaptation portion of our coaching often takes place in the assignee's own home.  Other typical locations include a rented room in a hotel or club.  The global leadership development portion of our coaching, being classic executive coaching, often is delivered in the coachee's office complex.

Who Delivers GROVEWELL's Coaching

Every GROVEWELL expatriate coach is a person of exceptional maturity, experience, and capacity for caring.  The average age of our coaches is 45+, and all are highly experienced in international business and well qualified professionally.  Almost all have been expatriates themselves.  GROVEWELL's partners believe that no other consultancy anywhere consistently assigns expatriate coaches who are as ideally qualified to work with corporate assignees and their families.  For 400-word professional biographies of the leading GROVEWELL associates worldwide, click here.

The partners insist that, for every expatriate coaching engagement, their firm makes available two competencies.  One is understanding of, and ability to deliver, GROVEWELL's signature Coaching for Global Advantage; this is the coach's responsibility.  The second competency is extensive business experience in the target country.  In pre-departure coaching sessions, this may need to be provided by a second service deliverer, a "resource person," who contributes under the coach's direction.  GROVEWELL's partners maintain high standards for resource people, especially in terms of the recency and relevance of their business experience in the target country.

Availability of On-Going Support

Some expatriates need additional support of one kind or another.  We are always available to respond to such needs.  Extensive extra support, of course, results in an additional fee, negotiated in advance of service.
