Introducing "Dr. Grove's Toolkit"
-
Dr. Grove's Toolkit for Effective Presentations to Nationally Mixed Audiences Worldwide is a training workshop deliverable over one to two days.  It may also be delivered as individual coaching.

Dr. Grove's Toolkit is based on a framework of understanding explicitly developed to support those who teach or instruct, facilitate or train, or otherwise formally present to groups of adults or young people in or from unfamiliar nations.

Not merely a framework, Dr. Grove's Toolkit comprises clearly stated presentation-skill action steps for people in "stand-up" roles in front of learning or listening groups anywhere in the world.

Beginning with his dissertation work and continuing to the present, Dr. Cornelius Grove's research illuminates the full spectrum of instructor-learner and presenter-listener interactions worldwide.

Dr. Grove's Toolkit provides not only fresh insights, but also demonstrations and opportunities to practice specific behavioral adjustments for skill-driven effectiveness in "stand-up" roles in front of of nationally mixed audiences (definition) of adult and young-adult learners or listeners.

IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION:
This body of knowledge is not a derivative or variation of the U.S. "multicultural education" or "diversity" perspectives.  Dr. Grove's approach has different roots and reaches different, sometimes contrary, conclusions about "what, therefore, to do."

Objectives of "Dr. Grove's Toolkit"
-
Those who participate wholeheartedly in Dr. Grove's Toolkit for Effective Presentations to Nationally Mixed Audiences Worldwide, whether delivered as coaching or training, will...

1. Acquire a framework for understanding knowledge-transfer practices and classroom cultures worldwide; this Framework is the foundation for Dr. Grove's "Advanced Tools."

2. Understand the value-rationales underlying knowledge-transfer approaches characteristic of presenters and instructors in many nations.

3. Predict the knowledge-transfer and classroom-culture expectations of learners and listeners in or from a variety of national cultures different from one's own.

4. Learn how to situationally adjust or "shift" their own assumptions and approaches in order to be more appealing to, and well-received by, nationally-mixed audiences.

5. Upgrade their skill at effectively transferring knowledge when making presentations or conducting training in front of an audience that includes people from other nations.

Definition of "nationally mixed audience"

The phrase "nationally mixed audience" is used because this coaching and training specifically addresses issues arising when the instructor or presenter is from one nation, and the learners/listeners are in/from one or more different nations

Descriptions of the coaching and training

Individual Coaching:  When delivered as coaching, Dr. Grove's Toolkit is quite flexible, and may be accomplished by telephone or face-to-face.  All work is focused on building the coachee's awareness and "stand-up" skills relevant to his or her self-identified need.  For example, a potential coachee might say, "I'll soon be giving business presentations in Asia; should I do anything differently?"  The answer is "yes" and the coaching would focus on what he/she should do differently in Asia, and why

The duration of this coaching ranges upwards from two hours.  All coaching is provided by Dr. Grove himself.  Minimum fee: $500 plus expenses.

Group Training:  When delivered as training, Dr. Grove's Toolkit takes the form of an interactive 2-day workshop.  It delivers a quick boost in effectiveness for business trainers, facilitators, and presenters (and others in a classroom instructor's role) who face groups of people in or from unfamiliar nations.  Benefits include...

  • Understanding a Framework for classifying knowledge-transfer methods worldwide.
  • Appreciation of value-rationales underlying the various presentation methods
  • More accurate expectations of the learning styles of foreign trainees/listeners.
  • Better ability to situationally shift one's instructional methods to fit the audience.
  • Overall, increased success in knowledge- and skill-transfer to learners from abroad.
Each  workshop provides participants with effectiveness-enhancing basic knowledge, then introduces and practices specific presentation and instructional skills.  Features include...
  • Flat fee of $7,000 plus expenses covers all services (Note 1).
  • Standardized manual of 90+ pages for each participant (Note 2).
  • Workshop is held at your chosen location; GROVEWELL's trainer travels (Note 3).
  • The standard workshop may occur, schedules permitting, within one week.
  • Individual coaching and mentoring may occur during/after the workshop.
Note 1: The $7,000 fee applies in North America; extra charge for groups over 20.
Note 2: Much of the manual is accounts of knowledge-transfer activity worldwide.
Note 3:  Training is presented by Dr. Grove or someone trained and certified by Dr. Grove.

Testimonials from former trainees

"Your presentation was fantastic and I greatly appreciated the validation I received for the things I have done in the past.  Currently, my assignment involves facilitation of meetings with people from a variety of cultures, and your information was extremely helpful.  You have a real supporter here at [Fortune 100 Corporation] and I am recommending this presentation to everyone."

"Dr. Grove, I wanted to write you a quick note and tell you about something that happened to me this week.  But first, some background...  I am working on a project in Taiyuan, China.  We have already conducted several training courses focusing on specific topics (e.g., setting environmental goals).  Well, last week I started preparing my materials for the next training session.  I took to heart several of your suggestions and wrote some background pieces to disseminate before the session, and I reworked the agenda to shift the interactive session to a more content-learning style.
"Before I was able to finish and send the materials to our translator, I received a call from a Chinese expert who has attended all the sessions.  She made several suggestions for improving our training.  The first of these was to provide written materials, preferably in advance (score one for Dr. Grove!).  Apparently the Chinese in our audience don't like PowerPoint slides unless they have some text to follow along with.  The second suggestion was to reduce the time for interactive sessions because the audience isn't comfortable with that format (score two for Dr. Grove!).  And the final recommendation was to disseminate written background materials on related topics that aren't scheduled for discussion.  The latter is so the audience can take these papers to their bosses so that they don't have to try to "teach" their supervisors (score three for Dr. Grove on account of the formality/hierarchy!)."

Dr. Grove's perspective on "learning styles"

Learning styles are often thought of as being congenitally-given mental learning pathways that are unique to each individual, a view that frames the conversation entirely in terms of "nature" (i.e., what one was born with).  Dr. Grove believes that "nurture" – i.e., an individual's experiences from earliest childhood within the cultural context of his or her group – also plays a role in the development of his or her preferred learning styles.

Dr. Grove believes that, whatever may be true regarding one's congenitally-given learning pathways, his/her preferred learning styles will also be shaped by the culture, and especially the classroom culture, in which he or she was nurtured while growing from early childhood to adulthood.

Dr. Grove's "Toolkit" training is not at all hostile to conversations about individuals' unique learning styles.  Rather, it supplements and enrichens those conversations by viewing learning styles in cross-cultural perspective.
