A 2- OR 3-DAY COURSE FOR LEADERS WITH LITTLE GLOBAL EXPERIENCE
OBJECTIVE: The objective of GROVEWELL's GLOBAL LEADERSHIP ESSENTIALS course is to introduce the essentials of global leadership to mid-level and senior leaders who have little experience leading and influencing others in the global arena, i.e., leading others whose cultures, mindsets, and expectations about leadership are different.
GLOBAL LEADERSHIP ESSENTIALS is a 2- or 3-day course with a design and agenda set in advance, as fully outlined immediately below. Thus, the time and expense of development and customization are eliminated.
The GLOBAL LEADERSHIP ESSENTIALS course can be delivered on your company's worksite within just a few weeks, consistent with the schedules of your course participants and GROVEWELL's facilitator.

COURSE DAY ONE
MORNING SESSION: DAY ONE
|How do I establish my credentials in a global environment?||Participants will be guided to introduce themselves in a globally appropriate manner.|
|What are the attributes of successful global leaders?||An overview of the qualities and competencies beyond those needed for domestic leadership.|
|How much do I know about the attributes of admired global leaders?||Completion during class of a short awareness-assessment based on GLOBE research findings.|
|What is a “global mindset”? Why do I need one?||An exploration of the benefits that sophisticated global leaders bring to their companies.|
|How does culture affect global leadership?||Consideration of the link between values and behavior in everyone's life. But what happens when someone with whom you must collaborate has values that are significantly different from yours?|
MID-DAY ACTIVITY: DAY ONE
|Themed working lunch||Guest speakers and/or guided discussions among participants.|
AFTERNOON SESSION: DAY ONE
|How can I improve my personal competencies for global leadership?||Each participant will review his or her composite ratings on the seven personal characteristics assessed 360° by the SURVEY ON GLOBAL LEADERSHIP READINESS. Each will identify one or two characteristics that need strengthening for effective global leadership, and will develop a personal Action Plan to accomplish that.|
|How can I become a valued, respected global leader?||The answer is: By learning to "be" your own brand of effective global leadership. The Action Plan developed by each participant will be recast as a step towards developing her or his own ways of responding to and leading others.|
|Assessment of key learnings and close of Day One||Participants will review their Action Plans and key "take-aways" from Day One.|
EVENING ACTIVITY: DAY ONE [OPTIONAL]
|Guest speaker or panel of global leaders||Alternatively, social activity such as a networking reception.|
COURSE DAY TWO
MORNING SESSION: DAY TWO
|What values are motivating and driving my team worldwide?||A comparison of the core values that impel team members in a variety of countries to strive, in their culturally appropriate ways, for effectiveness and high performance. Stories and cases to generate understanding of the key "dimensions" of culture.|
|How can I communicate more effectively within a culturally diverse environment?||An exploration of effective strategies for written and oral communication when those communicating are from different cultural backgrounds: E-mails that get responses, listening like you mean it, making difficult conversations culturally sensitive, feedback without flashback, etc. Self-development activities will be incorporated into participants' Action Plans as individually appropriate.|
MID-DAY ACTIVITY: DAY TWO
|Lunch||Open. Activity, theme, or speaker to be decided upon and arranged by our local client.|
AFTERNOON SESSION: DAY TWO
|Who are my stakeholders? How can I gain their trust?||Identifying key stakeholders at distant locations, including important colleagues within your company, local partners and vendors, customers and clients, and governmental officials. Understanding how they, from their cultural perspective, might be viewing you.|
|How can I influence others across cultural and organizational boundaries?||Consideration of a way of thinking about, and carrying out, attempts to influence stakeholders over whom you lack authority, and when their cultural background is different from yours. As individually appropriate, self-development activities will be incorporated into participants' Action Plans.|
|Assessment of key learnings and close of Day Two||Participants will review their Action Plans and key "take-aways" from Day Two. If a third training day is planned for a few weeks hence, each participant will determine personal development objectives to pursue, then to discuss during Day Three.|
EVENING ACTIVITY: DAY TWO
|Free evening||Keeping this evening free is important if some participants have come a distance.|
ABOUT THE OPTIONAL THIRD DAY:
If GROVEWELL's client is not interested in Day Three, we will prepare for Day Two a revised set of objectives and activities so that closure occurs during the afternoon.
There are two alternatives for GROVEWELL's delivery of the third day of Global Leadership Essentials training:
- Day Three occurs three or four weeks later. This is GROVEWELL's preferred arrangement because participants have an opportunity to pursue their personal development objectives, then to prepare a short overview of their progress for discussion during Day Three.
- Day Three immediately follows Day Two. In this case, the final activity of Day Two will be revised appropriately, as will portions of the Day Three description below.
COURSE DAY THREE [OPTIONAL]
MORNING SESSION: DAY THREE
|How do I build and lead to global virtual team?||Highlighted will be proven techniques for effectively leading team members who are dispersed in different locations. The importance of, and ways of, building relationships among team members will be emphasized.|
|How can I effectively coach, mentor, and delegate to my global team?||Explored will be special considerations for, and benefits of, coaching and mentoring team members from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Also explored will be differences in how to go about delegating responsibilities.|
MID-DAY ACTIVITY: DAY THREE
|Themed working lunch||Guest speakers and/or guided discussions among participants.|
AFTERNOON SESSION: DAY THREE
|Progress overviews of participants' personal development objectives||Each participant will offer an overview of his or her objectives, and of the successes they've gained and the challenges they've encountered since Day Two of this course.|
|Exploration of your company's greatest global leadership challenges||Participants in small groups will identify a global leadership challenge that their company, or one of their company's teams, is facing or will soon face. In plenary session, each group's challenge will be presented for group discussion, application of good global leadership practices, and guidance from GROVEWELL's instructor.|
|Action planning, strategies for continuous learning, and closure||This wrap-up session for the entire course will be both past- and future-oriented.|
Details re participant preparation for GLOBAL LEADERSHIP ESSENTIALS

Note that SGLR's per-participant fee is sharply reduced when SGLR is used with this "Essentials" course.
Based on GROVEWELL's experience, it is imperative that the 360° assessment process facilitated by SGLR begins four weeks prior to the start of the course.
Options to SGLR are available. The main options are
- use of a non-360° version of SGLR, or
- use of another less robust, non-360° instrument.
Financial and logistical details for GLOBAL LEADERSHIP ESSENTIALS
- GROVEWELL asks that course participants number between five and thirty. Virtual participation is possible using your company's existing virtual meeting systems.
- We will need to FedEx training materials from our office to your training location. Depending on the number of participants and of their locations (including virtual), the FedEx charges could total more than $750.
- If your preferred training site involves rental of a training room and/or standard equipment, either you will rent these items or GROVEWELL will pass those expenses on to you at cost.
- GROVEWELL's facilitator for this course will need to travel to/from your preferred training site. Hotel expenses also will occur. These expenses cannot be known in advance.
- The set fees below assume that the 360° SURVEY ON GLOBAL LEADERSHIP READINESS will be used. If you prefer a non-360° assessment, we will set new (lower) fees after the alternative assessment has been selected.
- The set fees below assume that the live in-room training will occur in the continental United States. If the in-room delivery would occur anywhere else in the world, fees will be set after we receive your inquiry via the LEARN MORE button.
The fees in the table below assume that...
- The in-room training will occur within the continental U.S. ("lower 48")
- Virtual participation, if any, will occur via your company's virtual meeting systems.
- The 360° SURVEY ON GLOBAL LEADERSHIP READINESS (SGLR) will be used
- Fees are "plus expenses" for facilitator travel, materials shipping, etc.
- No further professional fees (e.g., a development fee) will be charged.
